They Travel Alone??

 I just finished this book and I think it is amazing. Anna Hunt, a young successful journalist interviewing posh celebraties in London leaves the city-slick lifestyle (and everything that goes with it: the fame, the money..), for a break in Peru that is to change her life forever. She not only meets `the man of her dreams’, he also appears to be her guru and with his help she discovers the power that lies within herself. In two summers she becomes a Shaman, still wearing her stiletto’s in the other part of her life…but now healing people in different ways. Well done, Anna!

I was in the bookstore in East Tawas and asked the lady she has any books about traveling and personal development. I love the combination: cause that’s what you do when you travel alone: you have to find your way, meet people, make connections, see other cultures and learn, learn, learn. I love it. See, I am addicted to lifetime learning. So I gave her some examples)

Some reviewers criticized the book because they thought McCandless showed a lack of respect for the Alaskan wilderness. But still, Chris touched the life of many people wheb he travelled and hitch-hiked cross country from his well-to-do suburban home. I have great respect for that.

Even Eat, Pray, Love is a turnpager. Yes it has negative and positive reviews. But be honest, much of the modern world is in search of God, Spirituality (look at the shelves at bookstores in the ‘self help’ area!).
Elizabeth Gilbert’s voice is just one of many that calls for recognition and a cry for guidance to destiny and the things that give us peace and happiness in the infinite sense.

But let me get back to the book store in East Tawas. I thought mentioning these examples might ring a bell. But the lady turned at me and said ‘Oh my dear, believe me.. I don’t really have time to read books…”

Huh??? You work in a bookstore and you don’t have time to read? Oh haha, that is so funny! But it is such a shame. I love reading and use my vacations to empy my shelves so I can run to the next Waterstone’s!

My gorgious (and speedy) bike

Yes I know everybody has a car in the USA, but I love hiking and biking. So I wanted to rent a bike… nowhere in Tawas City! The only shop thas used to rent them had stopped cause they only had 12 rentals last year..

My amazing USA trainers (see peakpotentials) always tell me ‘there is always a way..’. So I was looking and asking and ran into the local fitness centre. They had bikes for sale..! But I did not want to buy I bike of course. Where to leave it when I go home again? So the nice girl behind the desk told me they did not rent bikes. I asked her if the owner was there.  Well, to cut a long story short: this was a very nice guy who was so kind to rent me a bike that was for sale! Isn’t that super? I love people that really want to help their customers. It is a real example for me! Will I do anything to help my client? I really hope so! I’ll do my best, cause this really made me happy!

The stratophere seemed to be the perfect place to have lunch.. great view and a quiet place, far from the noises of casino’s and hotels.

Like tonight: I wanted to stretch my legs after my first and huge Lebanese diner.. and as I walked pass one of the houses I heard a voice ask: ‘Hai, can I help you?’ I know it’s rare that people walk the streets and I am a complete stranger in an area where everybody seems to know each other.  But I had not expected the question. So I walked up the stairs to see where the voice was comning from and I saw this beautiful girl with a broad smile. Minutes later we were chatting over an Arab coffee on her balcony…  Please meet Ashley!

Hoover Dam, Nevada

As we were in Las Vegas, I wanted to visit the Hoover Dam, as it seemed quite imposing.

Hoover Dam is a concrete dam in the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, on the border between the US states of Arizona and Nevada. It was constructed between 1931 and 1936 in four years time and was completed more than two years ahead of schedule. Isn’t it something?

Its construction was the result of a massive effort involving thousands of workers, and cost over one hundred lives. The dam was named after President Herbert Hoover.

The dam controls floods, provide irrigation water and produce hydroelectric power.

Such a large concrete structure had never been built before, and some of the techniques were unproven. Families moved to the desolate area in the desert. The dry summer eather and the lack of facilities near the site also presented difficulties.

The dam’s generators provide power for public and private utilities in Nevada, Arizona, and California. Hoover Dam is a major tourist attraction; nearly a million people tour the dam each year. I can recommend it, it is absolutely great.
